Given your height and weight, your BMI (body mass index) is 19.15. That is WONDERFUL. Your weight is completely normal. You have absolutely 0 need to consider taking a diet pill. Just FYI, BMI is the standard calculation used by doctors to determine if people are at a healthy weight given their height. A BMI < 18 is underweight, 18-25 is normal, 25-30 overweight, and 30+ is considered obese. As you can see, your BMI falls on the lower end of normal. If you were to lose weight it could be unhealthy for your growth and development, and cause different problems for you.

From what you said you desired to do (lose 4 pounds and tone up your abs), those goals can be accomplished by doing ab workouts at home for 5-10 minutes a day before you go to sleep on the floor of your room, and taking out one piece of junk food per day and substituting it for a healthier alternative. If you”re already working out, just make sure you do a brief ab workout daily (your abs can take it) and you”ll see improvement in no time. Also, make sure your form for crunches/sit-ups/leg lifts is good. So many people THINK they”re doing a good ab workout but it is completely useless. You have to mix things up and do different exercises for your abs or your body will get used to what you are doing and you will see very little benefit from continued training.

Is Wellness Complete Health okay for a cat with crystals in urine?

I recently had my cat’s urine tested and it showed crystals. The vet tech recommended Hill’s Prescription Diet C/D, but I was not impressed that it contains a lot of ingredients I have been trying to avoid (by-products, corn gluten meal, etc). Also, my cat doesn’t like it. She had been on Purina One in the past, and then after discovering it wasn’t so great, I switched her to Natural Balance a few months ago. She also eats about a third of a can of Friskies wet food each day. I went to Petco and a lady there recommended Wellness to me and also recommended I not give her the Friskies anymore. I am very confused as to what the cause of the crystals is and what the best food for her is. I really would like a high-quality food to give her without all the crap in it. The Wellness seems to be good and says some things about promoting urinary tract health with their triple cranberry system. Thanks for any advice!

First, you *might* consider using the Hills just long enough to dissolve her crystals. I *think* it can do that….but don’t quote me. If you do decide to try it, perhaps go with the canned version instead. It may have slightly better ingredients and of course the extra hydration will be good. But it’s definitely not for long-term use. On the other hand, your cat has likely gotten meds and they may deal with the existing crystals as well, so there would be no need to try this food. I guess you might want to clarify that with your vet.

Wellness in general is a good food, but when it comes to their line of dry foods, the only one I really like is Core. The one you’re considerng isn’t bad though.

Natural Balance is a good line too, and their best dry food is the duck and green pea.

The Petco person is right about the Friskies too.

What I would do if I were you would be to increase the amount of canned food rather than looking for a urinary-health dry food. That may be all you’d need to do since the extra hydration provided in the wet foods keeps the urine pretty dilute.

About a year ago, I felt so sick that every bite of food I took, I had to throw up, because for some reason I did not know what was wrong with me, so I started to eat a lot of vegetables, rice cooked the way I always used to make it for my kids, with beans I cooked myself and that was the way I endured the sickness I had.
I got so sick that my family had to call an ambulance because for some reason I could not breath since my lungs were full of water and my heart was the size of a grapefruit, from than on I try to take care of myself by eating lots of vegetables and no greasy food, if I don’t the Doctor said that I would not last long.

Do not get a commercial pet food. That is what.
Despite that fact that vets push it, and its well marketed does not make a dog food and good dog food. In fact, foods like Science Diet, Iams, and Eukanuba all have corn as their main ingredient. Corn is a nasty grain, that doesn’t even digest in humans well. Dogs, which are carnivores, definitly can not digest this food. It is nothing more than a filler. A bad filler. One that has most likely led to weight gain even.
I know in the situation of my dads cat, eating Purina his whole life lead to diabetes. Because as you should know, even with people, corn turns to sugar once eaten.

If you want a good dog food then its time to do some research. There are several good ones out there, its just figuring out the difference between good and bad.
A good food will not have corn, soy, preservatives, or dyes. It will also feature a whole meat product as the main ingredient.

Healthy ways to gain weight on a vegetarian diet?

Alrighty, here’s the dealio:

I’m a 5’4 female, mid 20′s, and my weight fluctuates between 98-102 lbs. The most I’ve ever weighed was 107, and that was in high school — a couple years before I went veg’. I really want to reach 110 so I can fall within the healthy weight range for my height and gender, but this seems almost impossible, considering my crazy metabolism. I strive for a healthy diet (although I do enjoy some dark chocolate and baked goods ) I avoid fried foods, and I really try to limit the processed food that I eat.

Some complications: I am lactose-intolerant, and the only dairy i CAN tolerate is cheese — which I adore. I also have IBS, so I can’t eat a ton of fiber at once. 100% whole wheat is TOTALLY out of the question — makes me quite ill. Although I’m very much an adult, my dad is really concerned about my weight and wants me to eat organic meat for extra calories (although meat really doesn’t give you a lot of calories unless it’s super-fatty and/or fried). I also want to exercise more than I currently do (I love yoga, though), but I’m afraid of burning too many calories.

I do try to eat plenty of starches, healthy fats, and protein in addition to low-calorie produce, but it’s really hard for me to get 2300-ish calories in a day, which is about what I need. Any advice would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks so much, guys!

Pita breads- peanut butter and cream cheese on that. Add a chopped banana, it’s good for brekfast.

Oatmeal with soycream, almonds and honey- made for breakfast.
Brown rice- dress with olive oil and add walnuts, chickpeas, sweetcorn, green peas and some baked tofu.
Mix together and add a soyhoney dressing. It’s a great salad, with the chickpeas and corn.

Wholewheat pasta ( not so aggravating to IBS) with alfredo sauce- butter, cheese and a little soycream.

Grilled cheese and peanut butter-always good.

I wouldn’t advise cutting carbohydrates out of your diet. Your body uses energy from 3 of the 6 essential nutrients (fats, proteins, carbs)… Of these 3 your brain can only use carbs for energy. You NEED to eat carbs. There are plenty of whole grain things out there… Healthy things. As for what foods… Try to stay away from starchy vegetables such as potatoes & corn and focus more in broccoli, spinach, carrots, celery, etc. Any veggies can be eaten as snacks. I know you’re trying to lose weight but you need some fat in your diet so don’t forget about that!

You can’t just change what you eat to lose weight. Exercising is essential. To lose weight exercise 60-90 min a day and don’t forget strength training which will help increase your metabolic rate by building muscle.

How the Health Care Law is Making a Difference for the People of Texas

For too long, too many hardworking Americans paid the price for policies that handed free rein to insurance companies and put barriers between patients and their doctors. The Affordable Care Act gives hardworking families in Texas the security they deserve. The new health care law forces insurance companies to play by the rules, prohibiting them from dropping your coverage if you get sick, billing you into bankruptcy because of an annual or lifetime limit, or, soon, discriminating against anyone with a pre-existing condition.

All Americans will have the security of knowing that they don’t have to worry about losing coverage if they’re laid off or change jobs. And insurance companies now have to cover your preventive care like mammograms and other cancer screenings. The new law also makes a significant investment in State and community-based efforts that promote public health, prevent disease and protect against public health emergencies.

Health reform is already making a difference for the people of Texas by:

Expanding health insurance coverage in every state
The Affordable Care Act will expand health insurance coverage by establishing a Health Insurance Marketplace in every state and increasing access to the Medicaid program. 4,888,650 or 23% of Texas’s non-elderly residents are uninsured, of whom 4,478,407 (92%) may qualify for either tax credits to purchase coverage in the Marketplace or for Medicaid if Texas participates in the Medicaid expansion.

Establishing the Health Insurance Marketplace. When key parts of the health care law take effect in 2014, there’ll be a new way for individuals, families and small businesses to get health insurance. Beginning Oct. 1, 2013, individuals in every state will be able to shop for health insurance and compare plans through the Marketplace.

Increasing Access to Medicaid. In addition, Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) eligibility and enrollment will be much simpler and will be coordinated with the Marketplace.

Providing new coverage options for young adults
Health plans are now required to allow parents to keep their children under age 26 without job-based coverage on their family coverage, and, thanks to this provision, 3.1 million young people have gained coverage nationwide. As of December 2011, 357,000 young adults in Texas gained insurance coverage as a result of the health care law.

Making prescription drugs affordable for seniors
The Affordable Care Act makes prescription drug coverage (Part D) for people with Medicare more affordable. It does this by gradually closing the gap in drug coverage known as the "donut hole." Since the enactment of the law, 6.1 million Americans with Medicare who reached the donut hole have saved over $5.7 billion on prescription drugs. Nationwide, drug savings of $2.5 billion in 2012 were higher than the $2.3 billion in savings for 2011. In Texas, people with Medicare saved over $338.4 million on prescription drugs since the law’s enactment. In 2012 alone, 206,304 individuals in Texas saved over $140.2 million, or an average of $680 per beneficiary. In 2012, people with Medicare in the “donut hole” received a 50 percent discount on covered brand name drugs and 14 percent discount on generic drugs. And thanks to the Affordable Care Act, coverage for both brand name and generic drugs will continue to increase over time until the coverage gap is closed.

Covering preventive services with no deductible or co-pay
The health care law requires many insurance plans to provide coverage without cost sharing to enrollees for a variety of preventive health services, such as colonoscopy screening for colon cancer, Pap smears and mammograms for women, well-child visits, and flu shots for all children and adults. The law also makes proven preventive services free for most people on Medicare.

In 2011 and 2012, 71 million Americans with private health insurance gained preventive service coverage with no cost-sharing, including 5,198,000 in Texas. And for policies renewing on or after August 1, 2012, women can now get coverage without cost-sharing of even more preventive services they need. Approximately 47 million women, including 3,412,175 in Texas will now have guaranteed access to additional preventive services without cost-sharing.

The Affordable Care Act is also removing barriers for people with Medicare. With no deductibles or co-pays, cost is no longer a barrier for seniors and people with disabilities who want to stay healthy by detecting and treating health problems early. In 2012 alone, an estimated 34.1 million people with Medicare benefited from Medicare’s coverage of preventive services with no cost-sharing. In Texas, 1,795,711 individuals with traditional Medicare used one or more free preventive service in 2012.

Providing better value for your premium dollar through the 80/20 Rule
Under the new health care law, insurance companies must provide consumers greater value by spending generally at least 80 percent of premium dollars on health care and quality improvements instead of overhead, executive salaries or marketing. If they don’t, they must provide consumers a rebate or reduce premiums. This means that 1,516,721 Texas residents with private insurance coverage will benefit from $166,975,840 in rebates from insurance companies this year, for an average rebate of $187 per family covered by a policy.

Scrutinizing unreasonable premium increases
In every State and for the first time under Federal law, insurance companies are required to publicly justify their actions if they want to raise rates by 10 percent or more. Texas has received $1,000,000 under the new law to help fight unreasonable premium increases.

Removing lifetime limits on health benefits
The law bans insurance companies from imposing lifetime dollar limits on health benefits – freeing cancer patients and individuals suffering from other chronic diseases from having to worry about going without treatment because of their lifetime limits. Already, 7,536,000 people in Texas, including 2,771,000 women and 2,094,000 children, are free from worrying about lifetime limits on coverage. The law also restricts the use of annual limits and bans them completely in 2014.

Creating new coverage options for individuals with pre-existing conditions

Since 2010, Texas has received $38,000,000 in grants from the Prevention and Public Health Fund created by the Affordable Care Act. This new fund was created to support effective policies in Texas, its communities, and nationwide so that all Americans can lead longer, more productive lives.

Increasing support for community health centers and primary care clinicians
The Affordable Care Act increases the funding available to community health centers nationwide. In Texas, 69 health centers operate 396 sites, providing preventive and primary health care services to 975,509 people. Health Center grantees in Texas have received $224,639,256 under the Affordable Care Act to support ongoing health center operations and to establish new health center sites, expand services, and/or support major capital improvement projects.

As a result of historic investments through the Affordable Care Act and the Recovery Act, the numbers of clinicians in the National Health Service Corps are at all-time highs with nearly 10,000 Corps clinicians providing care to more than 10.4 million people who live in rural, urban, and frontier communities. The National Health Service Corps repays educational loans and provides scholarships to primary care physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, behavioral health providers, and other primary care providers who practice in areas of the country that have too few health care professionals to serve the people who live there. As of September 30, 2012, there were 325 Corps clinicians providing primary care services in Texas compared to 115 in 2008.

Strengthening partnerships with Texas

The law gives states support for their work to build the health care workforce, crack down on fraud, and support public health. These partnerships help ensure that health care providers are working where they are needed most – in both urban and rural areas. They ensure that half a million people annually get access to HIV/AIDS treatment and access to high quality primary care services.

Examples of Affordable Care Act grants to Texas not outlined above include:

  • $2,000,000 for health professions workforce demonstration projects, which will help low income individuals receive training and enter health care professions that face shortages.
  • $750,000 to support teaching health centers, creating new residency slots in community health centers.
  • $1,980,000 for the expansion of the Physician Assistant Training Program a five-year initiative to increase the number of physician assistants in the primary care workforce.
  • $5,595,692 for school-based health centers to help clinics expand their capacity to provide more health care services and modernize their facilities.
  • $287,100 for Family-to-Family Health Information Centers, organizations run by and for families with children with special health care needs.
  • $34,936,229 for Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Programs. These programs bring health professionals, social workers, or paraprofessionals to meet with at-risk families in their homes and connect families to the kinds of help that can make a real difference in a child’s health, development, and ability to learn – such as health care, early education, parenting skills, child abuse prevention, and nutrition.
