Shocking Confessions of a Drug Company Insider

The plot of this story seems to be ripped from the headlines … or maybe a movie about a big conspiracy or a cover-up of foul play … just like the Oscar award-winning “The Insider.”

But the story is 100% true.

Doctor’s Confession In 2003, a top executive of the pharmaceutical giant Glaxo-SmithKline — worldwide Vice President of genetics — confessed that “The vast majority of drugs — more than 90% — only work in 30 to 50% of the people.”

What that means is … most prescription drugs DON’T work on most people who take them!

Dr. Allen Roses is the pharmaceutical industry insider who made this shocking confession. Although it’s been an open secret within the pharmaceutical industry that most of the drugs it produces are ineffective in most patients, this is the first time that a high-ranking pharmaceutical executive has gone public.

1. Get to know your working environment.

For the past six weeks, I have transitioned into a different position in my company. This position has been hectic and stressful, to say the least. I have been working from a different location, and I have been out of my routine. I have really counted on a few things to stay healthy during this time. I am no expert, but I thought I’d share what I’ve learned with you!

Scope out the fridge, microwave, water and bathroom situations….adjust accordingly. I have had to pack lunch in my HUGE lunchbox with several ice packs because of not having a refrigerator to put my lunch in. Not super ideal to lug around my food for the day, but it works and it keeps me from eating out. When the microwave situation is sketchy, I know I can’t pack leftovers, so I opt for salad and/or snack items like fruit, nuts, lara bars, etc.

2. Excercise at the beginning of your day.

I know some people prefer to work out in the evening, but I’ve learned this is not for me. I don’t know how many times in my life I have planned to fit my workout in after work, and then came up with every excuse in the book to not do it. You WILL most likely be too tired, exhausted, or just mentally drained. I’ve found when I complete my workout in the morning, it puts some extra pep in my step during a long day. Plus, I don’t have to worry about fitting in one more thing before I get to go home.

3. Sleep!

Sleep is something that is non-negotiable to me. I go to bed early, and I wake up early. I rarely get less than 9 hours a day, and I’m more than okay with it. It sounds simple, but it’s nice to be tired at bed time, and feel awake first thing in the morning. I don’t usually nap, but I don’t usually need to. I absolutely believe that sleep is one of the most important things that makes my body feel like a well-oiled machine. I also believe that it’s SUPER underrated. I haven’t always made sleep a priority; I’ve only really paid attention to it in the last few years. I know how different I feel and how much more I can get accomplished during the day when I’m not tired and/or lethargic.

4. PLAN!

During a busy work week, I have found that if I don’t plan my meals, and take time to pack my lunch, I am pretty much setting myself up for disaster. I end up either “indulging” in something I normally wouldn’t/shouldn’t eat, or under-eating because I don’t want to eat something bad. Really, with a little plan, it can all be avoided.

5. Remember why you’re doing this.

Let’s face it, when I’m around people who aren’t watching what they eat, or do not exercise, it’s tempting for me to talk myself into their behaviors! WHAT?! Just because my co-workers are going out to Mickey D’s doesn’t mean I need to. Or just because there is candy around the office, doesn’t mean I need to eat it! I have to remind myself pretty frequently of my goals before acting. This isn’t always easy to do, but I’m always glad I did it in the end. I’ve done this at times by writing myself notes, or using a post it to display a goal of mine in an important place-like in my wallet.

Increasing Sexual Stamina

Millions of men ask themselves the same question every day, “how can I increase my superman stamina in the bedroom?”. For some, it’s a simple question of extending their pleasure. What is Chlamydia?

A Bacteria called Chlamydia Trachomatis

Signs/Symptoms of Chlamydia:

  • 80-90% of people will have no signs or symptoms
  • Unusual or increase in Vaginal discharge
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Abdominal pain that is not resolving
  • Pain during sex
  • Burning or discomfort during urination

How is it transmitted?

  • Sexual contact/intercourse
  • Exchange of body fluids (semen and sperm)
  • YOU CANNOT GET CHLAMYDIA FROM A TOILET SEAT OR SHARING TOWELS
  • It is possible to spread Chlamydia among female partners thru touching and also sharing of toys

How is it diagnosed?

  • Can be diagnosed thru a cervical swab
  • Also thru a urine sample
  • The turn around time for Chlamydia test results is very quick, usually within 1-2 days

Treatment:

Fortunately, Chlamydia is a treatable infection. The recommended and preferred treatment by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) is Zithromax.

  • Zithromax is dispensed as 4 tablets (250 mg each) to be taken all at one time (total of 1000 mg).
  • If you are allergic to Zithromax then you will most likely be given a prescription for Doxycycline. This is dispensed as 500 mg twice daily for 7 days.
  • It is very important that you abstain from sex for 7 days after taking treatment.
  • Your partner(s) should also be treated and abstain for 7 days after treatment.

Complications of Chlamydia:

Undiagnosed, untreated, prolonged or repeated Chlamydia infections can have long-term health complications.

It can lead to a serious condition known as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID.

PID can lead to scarring of the fallopian tubes, which can have long term consequences on fertility. It can also increase the chances of have an ectopic pregnancy (condition where a fertilized embryo or pregnancy implants or starts developing in the tube rather than the uterus).

How to limit Chlamydia infection/exposure:

  • Use condoms 100% of the time.
  • Make sure yourself and your partners are screened for Chlamydia and other STIs before engaging in sex.
  • Be screened for STIs on a regular basis (at your annual GYN visit or more often if you have had a change in sexual partner).
  • Do NOT have sex with someone who has any unusual discharge, complains of burning with urination, or has any unusual rash or sore.

Take home message:

Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection affecting numerous people each year in the United States. It is typically a silent infection where most people that are infected have no signs or symptoms. Because of this it can have very serious long term health complications.

Fortunately, it is a treatable infection and steps can be taken to limit one’s potential for infection.

Most importantly, BE SCREENED REGULARLY and MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING CONDOMS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF INFECTION.

Never be hesitant to speak with your health care provider on how to keep yourself safe and protected from sexually transmitted infections!

  1. It is great to see the numbers Sophia! Did you include the costs of laundry (extra energy, water, detergent, wear and tear on your equipment) in your tabulation? It could also be interesting to compare the extra amount of time spent doing laundry, above and beyond what time you would spend on disposables. Time is money!

    I am sure it will increase the costs if it is not already included in your numbers, but I bet it is still less money than the $1600 it costs to diaper most children. And though I have not seen anything definitive, my gut tells me disposables (solid waste in landfills, embodied energy to mass produce the diapers) are harder on the environment than cloth (water waste that is treated) so this is not only a lower cost to you, but a lower cost to the environment. And from what you have told me, your children react better to cloth than plastic, so less toxins in your daily life is a huge plus.

  2. No, I did not include the costs of laundry. I did write an article one year ago about cloth diapers where I said that washing diapers twice a week used no more water than a child would use to flush a toilet (if they were potty trained).     In our old house, the cost of water was included in our HOA fee so we personally spent no more on water to wash diapers. We line dried the diapers most of the time so I doubt we spent much on energy to wash the diapers. We use 1 oz of detergent per load (our 32 oz bottle of detergent costs $10, so at an estimated 30 cents per load, washing our diapers twice a week cost us an additional $31/year). Obviously there are additional costs for water/energy that are hard for me to calculate, but I think that these are fairly minor (like the detergent is).

    May I also point out that there are additional costs to disposable diapers that rarely get added into the calculations either–the gas and wear and tear on your car from extra trips to the grocery store when you run out of diapers, tax on the diapers, etc.

    On a side not, just this past week, a relative of mine decided to switch to cloth after using disposables for over 2 years! She has a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old in diapers and she said she was sick of spending $100 (at Costco) each month buying disposables and overnight diapers for her two kids.

Thankfully no one wakes up overnight obese, it takes time to grow into these habits, and eventually they end up growing your waist. The bad news is that if you’re overweight, you probably have a few habits to change. The good news is that choosing to change them will give you more energy, better sleep, and a greater feeling of satisfaction.

Move!

Most cases of obesity are caused by eating too much and moving too little. If you consume high amounts of energy from your diet but do not burn off the energy through exercise and physical activity, the surplus energy is turned into fat. So, as a general rule, invest energy to get energy – the more you burn, the leaner, lighter, stronger, and faster you’ll be.

Calories Are Not Everything

The energy value of food is measured in units called calories. The average physically active man needs 2,500 calories to maintain a healthy weight, and the average physically active woman needs just a shade over 2,000. This may sound high, it is often far too easy to reach this limit if you eat certain types of junk, or processed food.

For example, eating a large take away hamburger, fries and a milkshake can add up to 1,500 calories of your intake. This usually comes with the same amount of nutritional value as an iPod. The processed food makes you sluggish and sleepy – and so less active. So lots of the calories you’ve consumed end up converting straight into fat, rather than give you energy or by helping rebuild your tissues.

Eat delicious food you love, but learn to choose meals which will keep your head clear and your belly full without resorting to coffee or cigarettes. You control your food, not the other way around.

The aim is to eat food that fills you, gives a good slow burn of energy, and keeps you mentally alert.

Tip: Eat slower – food will taste better, last longer, and you’ll be much less sleepy and hungry between meals.

Lifestyle choices

As mentioned above, obesity does not just happen overnight – it develops gradually from poor diet and lifestyle choices.

DON’T:

* eat processed or fast food high in fat

* avoid eating fruit, vegetables and unrefined carbohydrates, such as wholemeal bread and brown rice (these fill you up, and give that good ‘slow’ burn we talked about.)

* drink too much alcohol – alcohol contains a LOT of calories, and heavy drinkers are often overweight

eating out a lot – you may have a starter or dessert in a restaurant, and the food can be higher in fat and sugar

* get Thirsty – drinking alcohol, fizzy drinks, Coffee will make you thirsty. Almost ALL hunger pangs in obese people are actually thirst pangs. Drink fresh water, lots of it, and if you’re still hungry in half an hour – then by all means go make yourself a sandwich.

* eat larger portions than you need – you may be encouraged to eat too much if your friends or relatives are also eating large portions, but they don’t have to fit into your clothes, and they won’t carry you up the stairs.

* comfort eat – if you feel depressed or have low self-esteem, you may comfort eat to make yourself feel better – recognize you’re down, get a cold drink, and watch a movie you like, or listen to some music, or invite friends round, or go visit family. If you’re heart is hungry, stuffing yourself will ironically just make you hungrier, and sadder

Unhealthy eating habits do tend to run in families; you learn bad eating habits from your elders. Childhood obesity, especially, is a strong indicator of weight-related health problems in later life; unless changed learned unhealthy lifestyle choices continue into adulthood. The best way to break these is to try new foods, new flavours, and try cooking simple things yourself – the joy of discovery plus satisfaction at enriching your life creates a virtuous circle.

Golden Rule: You’re done eating when you’re full. NOT when the plate is empty.

Physical Activity

Lack of physical activity is a problem. Do you have a job that involves sitting at a desk most of the day? Office life is stressful, people feel more ‘protected’ in cars rather than walking or cycling. If this is you then you need to find safe spaces to play and exercise. A gym is an obvious choice, but so are tennis courts, a swimming pool, a drive to a park where you can stretch your legs and have some ‘you’ time. The golden rule with physical activity is that it should leave you pleasantly exhausted – and always feeling better than when you began.

Ignore the No Pain No Gain crowd – they tend to watch America’s Biggest Loser on TV while growing fatter.

While there are government guidelines on the minimum amount of activity – it’s best to focus instead on introducing pleasant activity into your life.

  • Take a big stretch before you get out of bed – you’ll feel much better through the day.
  • Drink lots of water, and park somewhere pleasant, rather than closer to your office.
  • Don’t dash from place to place give yourself plenty of time – don’t be forced into exertion – exercise is an expression of your will and a way to show your vitality in life.
  • A few minutes walking to the local place at lunch, walking a block and picking up coffee for your workmates at the start of the day, going to the gym at lunchtime mid-week, these things are little, but they incline you to health and make the rest of your journey easier.

Try to do five hours a week, one or two sessions of play/gym and for the rest just work into your daily routine.

The above will start working immediately and you’ll see results in a few days, perhaps a week at most.
