The Magnesium Factor

The Review:

Drs. Seelig and Rosanoff have pinpointed The Lethal Flaw in American diet and medicine, that being chronic, culturally-induced magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency/calcium excess causes 90% of all lethal heart attacks, and causes more disease than anyone can imagine.

The reader Must see pages 5 and 17 of their book. Page 5 demonstrates that heart attack deaths in 1900 were essentially zero, but by 2000, the incidence had climbed to about 700000, per year due to a decline over the same time in magnesium dietary intake. Lethal heart attacks are caused by low magnesium. Page 17 demonstrates that nations with low magnesium/high calcium diets (u.

Finland, Netherlands) have a lethal heart attack rate 20 times higher than nations with high magnesium/low calcium diets (japan). Drs. Seelig & Rosenoff demonstrate by review of many peer-reviewed health log posts that nearly all of the serious/lethal heart deseases such as arrhythmias, tachycardia, Ekg & Ecg abnormalities, arteriosclerosis, hypertonia, angina, heart attacks (including sudden death heart attacks), high bad cholesterol, blood clots, mitral valve prolapes, type Ii diabetes, inability to handle stress are actually nothing more than Problems of hard magnesium deficiency.

Many other conditions such as constipation, kidney stones, menstrual cramps, pre-eclampsia, ecalampsia, Pms, spontaneous abortion, miscarriage, carbohydrate intolerance, ravenous appetite, obesity, low serum calcium and potassium (not correctable with supplements), elevated serum phosphorus, vitamin D resistance, muscle cramps, musle soreness, backaches, neck pain, migraines, Tmj, muscle tension and twitches, convulsions, migrane migraines, hearing loss, ringing in ears, hyperactivity, stress disorders, Adhd in kids, insomnia, numbness, tingling, agoraphobia, anxiety, depression, suicidal depression, irritability, panic attacks, all – each and every one – are Problems of low magnesium. The conditions that are treatable, curable and preventable with magnesium supplementation represent the bulk of conditions currently cured with expensive pharmaceutical medications and hospital procedures. If all Americans supplemented their diets with sufficient magnesium (estimates vary from 150 to 500 mg magnesium supplemental) per day, they believe would result a awesome reduction in the need for physican and hospital providers nation-wide. The general source of magnesium in the American nutrition plan 100 years ago when there was much magnesium in our food was wheat, dark green leafy vegetables and nuts.

Due to refining wheat, there is little magnesium remaining and people tend to avoid nuts due to their oil data. Most people do not eat enough vegetables. Conseqently, we have a serious culturally-induced magnesium deficiency that adversely affects all of our lives on a daily baises, and costs this country about 10% of its gross domestic offering in un-necessary health costs.

Drug Company Insider Reveals…

“In order to change we must be sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
“If you trust Google more than your doctor then maybe it’s time to switch doctors.”
Jaderl and Christina Cordova, Chasing Windmills

I am sharing the below article I have found because I want people to realize the truth and do something better for their health.
Also, I have nothing to do with a book recommended in a sense of any compensation or such.

Shocking Confessions of a Drug Company Insider

The plot of this story seems to be ripped from the headlines … or maybe a movie about a big conspiracy or a cover-up of foul play … just like the Oscar award-winning “The Insider.”

But the story is 100% true.

Doctor’s Confession In 2003, a top executive of the pharmaceutical giant Glaxo-SmithKline — worldwide Vice President of genetics — confessed that “The vast majority of drugs — more than 90% — only work in 30 to 50% of the people.”

What that means is … most prescription drugs DON’T work on most people who take them!

Dr. Allen Roses is the pharmaceutical industry insider who made this shocking confession. Although it’s been an open secret within the pharmaceutical industry that most of the drugs it produces are ineffective in most patients, this is the first time that a high-ranking pharmaceutical executive has gone public.

Some industry analysts said that the confession of Dr. Roses is reminiscent of the famous words uttered by Gerald Ratner, a British retail magnate in 1991, who said that his high-street shops are successful because they sell “total crap.”

But it’s one thing for a company to sell worthless products … and it’s another thing altogether to sell worthless products that kill instead of heal.

FACT: In the U.S., the odds of being killed by conventional medicine are almost 20 times (2,000%) greater than being killed in an automobile accident and almost 30 times (3,000%) greater than being killed by a gun.

It’s no wonder that the majority of doctors are frustrated. They entered the medical profession wanting to cure people — but the only tools that medical school training provides them for treating patients are … drugs and surgery.

Doctors have been thrust headlong into a marketing culture that relies on selling as many drugs as possible to the widest number of patients. It’s a culture that has made Big Pharma the most profitable industry in the world — even though most of its drugs are useless, at best — and even possibly harmful or deadly for many patients.

Dr. Roses, an academic geneticist from Duke University in North Carolina, further states: “Drugs for Alzheimer’s disease work in fewer than one in three patients, whereas those for cancer are only effective in a quarter of patients. Drugs for migraines, for osteoporosis, and arthritis work in about half the patients.”

The growing sentiment among doctors is that they want to offer their patients more treatment choices for curing disease than the medical system offers. One member of that growing number of doctors is Dr. Paul Beals.

Dr. Paul Beals”I want to do more for my patients than what’s offered by the pharmaceutical industry because I realized earlier on that modern medicine has become, unfortunately, more of a big business than a healing science.” — Paul Beals, M.D., C.C.N. Georgetown University School of Medicine (Course Instructor 1996-2004: Introduction to Complimentary and Alternative Medicine)

When Doctors Don’t Know the Cure, This is What They Turn To

Some time ago, Dr. Beals focused his medical practice on holistic nutrition and complementary medicine. He set up a holistic program for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, and other diseases. His challenge, however, was finding the resources for treating diseases … because conventional medicine offered only drugs and surgery.

He stumbled upon a book of medical breakthroughs and “forbidden treatments” that contained all the cures he was looking for. Interestingly enough, the book was written for the layperson — the general public — not medical professionals. And yet he was impressed to discover that every alternative treatment and healing breakthrough presented in the book was thoroughly researched, meticulously fact-checked and verified for its effectiveness. And it also came with footnotes from peer-reviewed, published medical research and scientific studies. He now regards the book as “… the ‘gold standard’ … the ‘bible’ for alternative medicine” and believes “It should be in everybody’s home and in every doctor’s office.”

Dr. Beals is not alone in his high regard of the book. Countless enlightened doctors from around the world are avid fans of the book — and use the treatments presented in the book when they themselves or their family members are stricken with diseases or health problems.

Dr. Russell Simmons Dr. Richard Simmons thinks that everyone needs this book of medical breakthroughs and “forbidden treatments” in order to take control of their own health. Dr. Simmons is a medical doctor who sits on the faculty at Ohio State University, where he’s an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. He’s also the former Chairman of the Alternative Medicine Committee of the Columbus Medical Association

Dr. Simmons’s wife developed cancer 6 years ago, and underwent surgery, which put the cancer in remission temporarily. A year ago, her cancer came back — and instead of turning to conventional cancer therapy, he and his wife turned to the discoveries presented in the book to help prevent further surgery and further progression of the disease.

A doctor friend of Dr. Simmons, whose practice is based in Hawaii, started developing cataracts. A chapter of the book revealed a discovery about some little-known eye drops … and he began administering the eye drops on himself and noticed significant improvement in vision. He continues to take the drops to this day.

The book of medical breakthroughs and “forbidden treatments” contains dozens of cures for the most prevalent diseases that plague mankind, such as …

==> A $200 “Cure” for AIDS / HIV – A patented low-voltage device that stops the AIDS virus dead in its tracks. This inexpensive “in-home” device costs only $200, and is safe for home use.

==> A Nobel Prize Nominee Cures Cancer With 2 Common Household Items – A simple protocol for cancer treatment and prevention based on the use of small amounts of 2 inexpensive food substances combined together in specific proportions. Numerous independent clinical studies prove that these 2 food items provide a powerful and effective means of treating even the most advanced cancers. This method was shown to have a 90% success rate in saving terminal cancer patients from certain death.

==> An Infra-Red Helmet That Has a 90% Success Rate in Halting the Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease – There’s a space-age helmet that uses new “light beam” technology to reverse Alzheimer’s in as little as 30 days when used 10 minutes a day!

==> An Extremely Potent Anti-Inflammatory Breakthrough Does Wonders for Arthritis Sufferers — Over 3 decades of painstaking research has led to the development of an anti-inflammation remedy that reduces swollen joints by 79%! The anti-arthritic marine lipids derived from a New Zealand mollusk have been tested extensively at the University of Queensland in Australia — and the results are quite dramatic!

==> An Herb That Virtually Eradicates Heart Disease – There’s an herb that has been used overseas to treat over 15,000 cardiac patients over a 20-year period — and there has been no recurrence of their disease.

Dr. Roth AndersenDr. Ross Andersen, a doctor of naturopathic medicine (N.D.) and chiropractic physician (D.C.), was constantly looking for ways to identify the root cause(s) — of his patients’ problems. He devoted many years of study looking for answers to the diverse health problems of his patients. He found the answers he was looking for in the same book of medical breakthroughs and “forbidden treatments” that has been praised by laypeople and doctors alike.

“This book goes far beyond anything that I’ve ever used,” said Dr. Andersen. It’s absolutely one of a kind … It’s so complete, so precise, so easy to use.” He particularly appreciates how simple it is for anyone to look up a disease in the index, then flip to the page(s) of the book that features the disease — and find treatments, procedures, healing modalities, and supplements that are not only effective, but also inexpensive, non-invasive, and free of side effects.

“This book is something that every alternative physician … and ultimately every regular physician, and every patient is going to want in their home or office so that they can get the most benefit and the answers that are necessary to get their health condition handled.”

Books offering miracle cures for practically every disease are available everywhere. But oftentimes, they present content that is erroneous, inaccurate, poorly researched — and unsubstantiated by science. It’s no wonder that doctors and scientists ridicule such “cures” as nothing more than folklore or kitchen table wisdom. and little me 🙂

1. Get to know your working environment.

For the past six weeks, I have transitioned into a different position in my company. This position has been hectic and stressful, to say the least. I have been working from a different location, and I have been out of my routine. I have really counted on a few things to stay healthy during this time. I am no expert, but I thought I’d share what I’ve learned with you!

Scope out the fridge, microwave, water and bathroom situations….adjust accordingly. I have had to pack lunch in my HUGE lunchbox with several ice packs because of not having a refrigerator to put my lunch in. Not super ideal to lug around my food for the day, but it works and it keeps me from eating out. When the microwave situation is sketchy, I know I can’t pack leftovers, so I opt for salad and/or snack items like fruit, nuts, lara bars, etc.

2. Excercise at the beginning of your day.

I know some people prefer to work out in the evening, but I’ve learned this is not for me. I don’t know how many times in my life I have planned to fit my workout in after work, and then came up with every excuse in the book to not do it. You WILL most likely be too tired, exhausted, or just mentally drained. I’ve found when I complete my workout in the morning, it puts some extra pep in my step during a long day. Plus, I don’t have to worry about fitting in one more thing before I get to go home.

3. Sleep!

Sleep is something that is non-negotiable to me. I go to bed early, and I wake up early. I rarely get less than 9 hours a day, and I’m more than okay with it. It sounds simple, but it’s nice to be tired at bed time, and feel awake first thing in the morning. I don’t usually nap, but I don’t usually need to. I absolutely believe that sleep is one of the most important things that makes my body feel like a well-oiled machine. I also believe that it’s SUPER underrated. I haven’t always made sleep a priority; I’ve only really paid attention to it in the last few years. I know how different I feel and how much more I can get accomplished during the day when I’m not tired and/or lethargic.

4. PLAN!

During a busy work week, I have found that if I don’t plan my meals, and take time to pack my lunch, I am pretty much setting myself up for disaster. I end up either “indulging” in something I normally wouldn’t/shouldn’t eat, or under-eating because I don’t want to eat something bad. Really, with a little plan, it can all be avoided.

5. Remember why you’re doing this.

Let’s face it, when I’m around people who aren’t watching what they eat, or do not exercise, it’s tempting for me to talk myself into their behaviors! WHAT?! Just because my co-workers are going out to Mickey D’s doesn’t mean I need to. Or just because there is candy around the office, doesn’t mean I need to eat it! I have to remind myself pretty frequently of my goals before acting. This isn’t always easy to do, but I’m always glad I did it in the end. I’ve done this at times by writing myself notes, or using a post it to display a goal of mine in an important place-like in my wallet.

Increasing Sexual Stamina

Millions of men ask themselves the same question every day, “how can I increase my superman stamina in the bedroom?”. For some, it’s a simple question of extending their pleasure. For others it can be a serious issue that plagues their self-esteem. In either case, there are solutions. It’s important to remember that no two people are alike; some remedies that work for certain men in a snap, may have little to know effect on others. The secret is finding the root of the problem and addressing it accordingly.

There are plenty of solutions for those men who feel they’ve found themselves in a stamina slump and desire a quick fix. Certain products on today’s market are meant for maximizing the time between the sheets. Desensitizing creams are intended to dull the nerve endings in the penis for a short period of time, allowing men to perform for longer periods. These are easily located both online and in many specialty stores. Another easy way decrease sensitivity is by using thicker condoms. This is a common method, and men need go no further than their neighborhood drug store.

However, some men are in search of fixing the situation for the long term. There’s hope for those who are willing to dedicate some time and energy to the practice. In many cases, the issue can be resolved with some specific self control techniques. A major one of these is breath control. Deep and slow breaths have the ability to slow the heart rate and control blood flow, thus leading to a more rhythmic and extended activity. It’s also helpful to ensure that you’re in good physical condition. Stamina, when it comes to athletics directly relates to stamina in the bedroom

There is an array of techniques at your disposal if the problem isn’t so much stamina, but rather, having your mate achieve orgasm before you. It’s important to remember that foreplay is an essential part of the love making process for any woman. This could mean kissing and heavy petting, or playing close attention to her below the belt. Most women take significant time to get warmed up, but once she’s there it’s easy to help her reach the big O. Remember, if she’s close, don’t change anything. Once a woman is near orgasm, it becomes very easy for her to lose it. Don’t try to spice things up by changing positions, keep with the same stroke and you’ll see results.

Still, some men may find that there is a deeper issue that needs resolution. These can be emotional triggers that may need to be attended through counseling, and at times, prescription medication. While the question of sexual stamina can be embarrassing, it’s important to remember that it’s an event almost all men will experience at some point during their lives.

Chlamydia: The Silent Infection

What is Chlamydia?

A Bacteria called Chlamydia Trachomatis

Signs/Symptoms of Chlamydia:

  • 80-90% of people will have no signs or symptoms
  • Unusual or increase in Vaginal discharge
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Abdominal pain that is not resolving
  • Pain during sex
  • Burning or discomfort during urination

How is it transmitted?

  • Sexual contact/intercourse
  • Exchange of body fluids (semen and sperm)
  • It is possible to spread Chlamydia among female partners thru touching and also sharing of toys

How is it diagnosed?

  • Can be diagnosed thru a cervical swab
  • Also thru a urine sample
  • The turn around time for Chlamydia test results is very quick, usually within 1-2 days

Fortunately, Chlamydia is a treatable infection. The recommended and preferred treatment by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) is Zithromax.

  • Zithromax is dispensed as 4 tablets (250 mg each) to be taken all at one time (total of 1000 mg).
  • If you are allergic to Zithromax then you will most likely be given a prescription for Doxycycline. This is dispensed as 500 mg twice daily for 7 days.
  • It is very important that you abstain from sex for 7 days after taking treatment.
  • Your partner(s) should also be treated and abstain for 7 days after treatment.

Complications of Chlamydia:

Undiagnosed, untreated, prolonged or repeated Chlamydia infections can have long-term health complications.

It can lead to a serious condition known as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID.

PID can lead to scarring of the fallopian tubes, which can have long term consequences on fertility. It can also increase the chances of have an ectopic pregnancy (condition where a fertilized embryo or pregnancy implants or starts developing in the tube rather than the uterus).

How to limit Chlamydia infection/exposure:

  • Use condoms 100% of the time.
  • Make sure yourself and your partners are screened for Chlamydia and other STIs before engaging in sex.
  • Be screened for STIs on a regular basis (at your annual GYN visit or more often if you have had a change in sexual partner).
  • Do NOT have sex with someone who has any unusual discharge, complains of burning with urination, or has any unusual rash or sore.

Take home message:

Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection affecting numerous people each year in the United States. It is typically a silent infection where most people that are infected have no signs or symptoms. Because of this it can have very serious long term health complications.

Fortunately, it is a treatable infection and steps can be taken to limit one’s potential for infection.

Never be hesitant to speak with your health care provider on how to keep yourself safe and protected from sexually transmitted infections!

2 Responses to “$800 to diaper two children”

  1. It is great to see the numbers Sophia! Did you include the costs of laundry (extra energy, water, detergent, wear and tear on your equipment) in your tabulation? It could also be interesting to compare the extra amount of time spent doing laundry, above and beyond what time you would spend on disposables. Time is money!

I am sure it will increase the costs if it is not already included in your numbers, but I bet it is still less money than the $1600 it costs to diaper most children. And though I have not seen anything definitive, my gut tells me disposables (solid waste in landfills, embodied energy to mass produce the diapers) are harder on the environment than cloth (water waste that is treated) so this is not only a lower cost to you, but a lower cost to the environment. And from what you have told me, your children react better to cloth than plastic, so less toxins in your daily life is a huge plus.

  2. No, I did not include the costs of laundry. I did write an article one year ago about cloth diapers where I said that washing diapers twice a week used no more water than a child would use to flush a toilet (if they were potty trained). Here it is:

In our old house, the cost of water was included in our HOA fee so we personally spent no more on water to wash diapers. We line dried the diapers most of the time so I doubt we spent much on energy to wash the diapers. We use 1 oz of detergent per load (our 32 oz bottle of detergent costs $10, so at an estimated 30 cents per load, washing our diapers twice a week cost us an additional $31/year). Obviously there are additional costs for water/energy that are hard for me to calculate, but I think that these are fairly minor (like the detergent is).

May I also point out that there are additional costs to disposable diapers that rarely get added into the calculations either–the gas and wear and tear on your car from extra trips to the grocery store when you run out of diapers, tax on the diapers, etc.

On a side not, just this past week, a relative of mine decided to switch to cloth after using disposables for over 2 years! She has a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old in diapers and she said she was sick of spending $100 (at Costco) each month buying disposables and overnight diapers for her two kids.

My Son and The Afterlife

"Dr. Elisa Medhus offers a heartfelt, deeply moving story that invites readers to question their own beliefs of love, loss, and the afterlife." (Eben Alexander, MD author of the NY Times bestseller Proof of Heaven)

“Elisa’s journey has been amazing and she is well-qualified to share her knowledge with both the medical community and the grief community. She has the credentials to bridge the gap that often exists between these two groups, and by doing so, she is breaking new ground and leading the way for many of us working in the field of bereavement, hospice care, and consciousness.” (Terri Daniel, author, educator, end-of-life advisor, interfaith chaplaincy, and founder/director of the Afterlife Education Foundation and the Annual Afterlife Awareness Conference)

My Son and the Afterlife contains the clearest, most informative answers to questions about what happens after a person passes into the afterlife that I have read in one book. The topics explored a range from very human, personal issues such as who greets the person after their passing to insightful descriptions of the nature of consciousness and reality.” (R. Craig Hogan, PhD, author of Your Eternal Self)

“Erik”s messages are poignant, profound, informative, and entertaining, and above all give us that assurance that we all long for—that there is life beyond death, and that all is well there. Erik’s words help our minds to understand, but most of all he helps our hearts to heal and our joy to soar. Thank you, Erik." (Christine Elder, author of Broken Blessings)

My Son and the Afterlife by Elisa Medhus, MD is a book that will tug at your heart strings, make you laugh, cry, and more importantly, consider possibilities that you had probably never thought about before. This book, a record of the author’s conversations with her recently deceased son, Erik, is as real, authentic, and straightforward as it gets. Dr. Medhus and her son Erik, are both in a state of flux struggling to make sense of new perspectives that were thrust upon them as a result of Erik’s suicide. Both are determined to fully explore and share their newfound awareness as they provide much needed healing for each other, find new meaning and significance in the love that binds them, and invite you to come along on their poignant journey to the other side of death.” (Thomas Campbell, physicist and author of My Big TOE (Theory of Everything))

“Raised by atheist parents, Elisa Medhus, MD. believed only in a material reality—until her mind was jarred open by the excruciating loss of her son, Erik. Following his death she began to receive anomalous communications matching with Erik’s distinctive personality. Always direct and sometimes crude, the insightful messages forever changed Elisa’s worldview. I was touched by the continuing dialog between mother and son, finding it both comforting and enlightening. Don’t be surprised if Elisa’s story alters your ideas about the nature of reality too.” (Mark Ireland, author of Soul Shift)

“The hide-bound reductionist materialism of 19th and early 20th century science is crumbling under new discoveries and their relevance to what sensitive people through the ages have known all along. Dr. Medhus meticulously guides us through her own epiphany as she, a medical doctor, an exploring mind, and suddenly a re-focused mother finds the intensely personal strength to understand her son”s suicide and its larger meaning in the nature of which we are all part, and the courageous professional strength to bring her realizations to us. While this book is obviously an invaluable resource for theologians and physicists, and ethicists and counselors, it is truly a touchstone for all of us who feel and who seek to understand the transcendental nature of the human condition.” (Marco M. Pardi, MA, DPS, anthropologist and thanatologist)

“Dr. Elisa Medhus has approached her conversations with her son Erik in a courageous and systematic way, using all the analytical skills of a trained scientist. She asks Erik the hard questions that any parent who has lost a child would want answers to, and more. Erik answers all these questions with his own characteristic laid-back directness in a no-nonsense way that brings our understanding of the afterlife into the twenty-first century. This is a remarkable book written by remarkable people, which will bring hope and comfort to the bereaved and change many lives for the better.” (Dr. Victor Zammit, author of A Lawyer Presents the Evidence for the Afterlife)

About the Author

Once Erik began to communicate with family, friends, and blog members, Dr. Medhus’s entire paradigm shifted as she embarked on a journey toward spiritual understanding and belief.

Losing Weight is Easy

Losing weight is actually easy. The hard part is keeping it off, by stabilizing a new way of eating, living, and playing. We’re going to focus in this article on some quick and effective ways to lose weight.

Remember: losing weight isn’t your biggest challenge, and it should never be seen that way: adjusting your life patterns gently and in line with your own reasonable goals will definitely work.

Causes of Obesity

It is important to understand that if you have a genetic history of obesity then perhaps your metabolism and culture play together to make you weigh more than is healthy for you. Coming home, having dinner and then watching television in a sleepy haze for most of the night is commonplace, as is mortgaging tomorrow by spending time on the internet until the early hours. Thankfully no one wakes up overnight obese, it takes time to grow into these habits, and eventually they end up growing your waist. The bad news is that if you’re overweight, you probably have a few habits to change. The good news is that choosing to change them will give you more energy, better sleep, and a greater feeling of satisfaction.

Most cases of obesity are caused by eating too much and moving too little. If you consume high amounts of energy from your diet but do not burn off the energy through exercise and physical activity, the surplus energy is turned into fat. So, as a general rule, invest energy to get energy – the more you burn, the leaner, lighter, stronger, and faster you’ll be.

Calories Are Not Everything

The energy value of food is measured in units called calories. The average physically active man needs 2,500 calories to maintain a healthy weight, and the average physically active woman needs just a shade over 2,000. This may sound high, it is often far too easy to reach this limit if you eat certain types of junk, or processed food.

For example, eating a large take away hamburger, fries and a milkshake can add up to 1,500 calories of your intake. This usually comes with the same amount of nutritional value as an iPod. The processed food makes you sluggish and sleepy – and so less active. So lots of the calories you’ve consumed end up converting straight into fat, rather than give you energy or by helping rebuild your tissues.

Eat delicious food you love, but learn to choose meals which will keep your head clear and your belly full without resorting to coffee or cigarettes. You control your food, not the other way around.

The aim is to eat food that fills you, gives a good slow burn of energy, and keeps you mentally alert.

Tip: Eat slower – food will taste better, last longer, and you’ll be much less sleepy and hungry between meals.

Lifestyle choices

As mentioned above, obesity does not just happen overnight – it develops gradually from poor diet and lifestyle choices.

* eat processed or fast food high in fat

* avoid eating fruit, vegetables and unrefined carbohydrates, such as wholemeal bread and brown rice (these fill you up, and give that good ‘slow’ burn we talked about.)

* drink too much alcohol – alcohol contains a LOT of calories, and heavy drinkers are often overweight

eating out a lot – you may have a starter or dessert in a restaurant, and the food can be higher in fat and sugar

* get Thirsty – drinking alcohol, fizzy drinks, Coffee will make you thirsty. Almost ALL hunger pangs in obese people are actually thirst pangs. Drink fresh water, lots of it, and if you’re still hungry in half an hour – then by all means go make yourself a sandwich.

* eat larger portions than you need – you may be encouraged to eat too much if your friends or relatives are also eating large portions, but they don’t have to fit into your clothes, and they won’t carry you up the stairs.

* comfort eat – if you feel depressed or have low self-esteem, you may comfort eat to make yourself feel better – recognize you’re down, get a cold drink, and watch a movie you like, or listen to some music, or invite friends round, or go visit family. If you’re heart is hungry, stuffing yourself will ironically just make you hungrier, and sadder

Unhealthy eating habits do tend to run in families; you learn bad eating habits from your elders. Childhood obesity, especially, is a strong indicator of weight-related health problems in later life; unless changed learned unhealthy lifestyle choices continue into adulthood. The best way to break these is to try new foods, new flavours, and try cooking simple things yourself – the joy of discovery plus satisfaction at enriching your life creates a virtuous circle.

Golden Rule: You’re done eating when you’re full. NOT when the plate is empty.

Physical Activity

Lack of physical activity is a problem. Do you have a job that involves sitting at a desk most of the day? Office life is stressful, people feel more ‘protected’ in cars rather than walking or cycling. If this is you then you need to find safe spaces to play and exercise. A gym is an obvious choice, but so are tennis courts, a swimming pool, a drive to a park where you can stretch your legs and have some ‘you’ time. The golden rule with physical activity is that it should leave you pleasantly exhausted – and always feeling better than when you began.

Ignore the No Pain No Gain crowd – they tend to watch America’s Biggest Loser on TV while growing fatter.

While there are government guidelines on the minimum amount of activity – it’s best to focus instead on introducing pleasant activity into your life.

  • Take a big stretch before you get out of bed – you’ll feel much better through the day.
  • Drink lots of water, and park somewhere pleasant, rather than closer to your office.
  • Don’t dash from place to place give yourself plenty of time – don’t be forced into exertion – exercise is an expression of your will and a way to show your vitality in life.
  • A few minutes walking to the local place at lunch, walking a block and picking up coffee for your workmates at the start of the day, going to the gym at lunchtime mid-week, these things are little, but they incline you to health and make the rest of your journey easier.

Try to do five hours a week, one or two sessions of play/gym and for the rest just work into your daily routine.

The above will start working immediately and you’ll see results in a few days, perhaps a week at most.
