I’m a second year med student, and we actually JUST talked about weight loss today in a clinical management class.

Given your height and weight, your BMI (body mass index) is 19.15. That is WONDERFUL. Your weight is completely normal. You have absolutely 0 need to consider taking a diet pill. Just FYI, BMI is the standard calculation used by doctors to determine if people are at a healthy weight given their height. A BMI < 18 is underweight, 18-25 is normal, 25-30 overweight, and 30+ is considered obese. As you can see, your BMI falls on the lower end of normal. If you were to lose weight it could be unhealthy for your growth and development, and cause different problems for you.

From what you said you desired to do (lose 4 pounds and tone up your abs), those goals can be accomplished by doing ab workouts at home for 5-10 minutes a day before you go to sleep on the floor of your room, and taking out one piece of junk food per day and substituting it for a healthier alternative. If you”re already working out, just make sure you do a brief ab workout daily (your abs can take it) and you”ll see improvement in no time. Also, make sure your form for crunches/sit-ups/leg lifts is good. So many people THINK they”re doing a good ab workout but it is completely useless. Is Wellness Complete Health okay for a cat with crystals in urine?

I recently had my cat’s urine tested and it showed crystals. The vet tech recommended Hill’s Prescription Diet C/D, but I was not impressed that it contains a lot of ingredients I have been trying to avoid (by-products, corn gluten meal, etc). Also, my cat doesn’t like it. She had been on Purina One in the past, and then after discovering it wasn’t so great, I switched her to Natural Balance a few months ago. She also eats about a third of a can of Friskies wet food each day. I went to Petco and a lady there recommended Wellness to me and also recommended I not give her the Friskies anymore. I am very confused as to what the cause of the crystals is and what the best food for her is. I really would like a high-quality food to give her without all the crap in it. The Wellness seems to be good and says some things about promoting urinary tract health with their triple cranberry system. Thanks for any advice!

First, you *might* consider using the Hills just long enough to dissolve her crystals. I *think* it can do that….but don’t quote me. If you do decide to try it, perhaps go with the canned version instead. It may have slightly better ingredients and of course the extra hydration will be good. But it’s definitely not for long-term use. On the other hand, your cat has likely gotten meds and they may deal with the existing crystals as well, so there would be no need to try this food. I guess you might want to clarify that with your vet.

Wellness in general is a good food, but when it comes to their line of dry foods, the only one I really like is Core. The one you’re considerng isn’t bad though.

Natural Balance is a good line too, and their best dry food is the duck and green pea.

The Petco person is right about the Friskies too.

What I would do if I were you would be to increase the amount of canned food rather than looking for a urinary-health dry food. That may be all you’d need to do since the extra hydration provided in the wet foods keeps the urine pretty dilute.

The foods I’ll link you to are all or mostly all grainless but none of them claim to do anything in particular for the urine. But like I said, if you increase the wet foods, that might be all you’ll need to do to prevent future flareups. Also check the link on urinary problems….it’s a good starting point for learning more about it in layman’s terms.

About a year ago, I felt so sick that every bite of food I took, I had to throw up, because for some reason I did not know what was wrong with me, so I started to eat a lot of vegetables, rice cooked the way I always used to make it for my kids, with beans I cooked myself and that was the way I endured the sickness I had.
I got so sick that my family had to call an ambulance because for some reason I could not breath since my lungs were full of water and my heart was the size of a grapefruit, from than on I try to take care of myself by eating lots of vegetables and no greasy food, if I don’t the Doctor said that I would not last long.
That scared me some so yes now I love any vegetable I cook.

I got my vet’s approval to switch my yorkie from Hills Science Diet prescription allergenic food to a weight control food, not sure if I should get Iams, Eukenuba, or what? I want one that is AFCO certified.

Do not get a commercial pet food. That is what.
Despite that fact that vets push it, and its well marketed does not make a dog food and good dog food. In fact, foods like Science Diet, Iams, and Eukanuba all have corn as their main ingredient. Corn is a nasty grain, that doesn’t even digest in humans well. Dogs, which are carnivores, definitly can not digest this food. It is nothing more than a filler. A bad filler. One that has most likely led to weight gain even.
I know in the situation of my dads cat, eating Purina his whole life lead to diabetes. Because as you should know, even with people, corn turns to sugar once eaten.

If you want a good dog food then its time to do some research. There are several good ones out there, its just figuring out the difference between good and bad.
A good food will not have corn, soy, preservatives, or dyes. It will also feature a whole meat product as the main ingredient.
The BEST of foods won’t contain any grains whatsoever.

Healthy ways to gain weight on a vegetarian diet?

Alrighty, here’s the dealio:

I’m a 5’4 female, mid 20′s, and my weight fluctuates between 98-102 lbs. The most I’ve ever weighed was 107, and that was in high school — a couple years before I went veg’. I really want to reach 110 so I can fall within the healthy weight range for my height and gender, but this seems almost impossible, considering my crazy metabolism. I strive for a healthy diet (although I do enjoy some dark chocolate and baked goods ) I avoid fried foods, and I really try to limit the processed food that I eat.

Some complications: I am lactose-intolerant, and the only dairy i CAN tolerate is cheese — which I adore. I also have IBS, so I can’t eat a ton of fiber at once. 100% whole wheat is TOTALLY out of the question — makes me quite ill. Although I’m very much an adult, my dad is really concerned about my weight and wants me to eat organic meat for extra calories (although meat really doesn’t give you a lot of calories unless it’s super-fatty and/or fried). I also want to exercise more than I currently do (I love yoga, though), but I’m afraid of burning too many calories.

I do try to eat plenty of starches, healthy fats, and protein in addition to low-calorie produce, but it’s really hard for me to get 2300-ish calories in a day, which is about what I need. Any advice would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks so much, guys!

Pita breads- peanut butter and cream cheese on that. Add a chopped banana, it’s good for brekfast.

Oatmeal with soycream, almonds and honey- made for breakfast.
Brown rice- dress with olive oil and add walnuts, chickpeas, sweetcorn, green peas and some baked tofu.
Mix together and add a soyhoney dressing. It’s a great salad, with the chickpeas and corn.

Wholewheat pasta ( not so aggravating to IBS) with alfredo sauce- butter, cheese and a little soycream.

Grilled cheese and peanut butter-always good.

Guacomole with corn tortilla chips for snack.

COrn tortilla enchiladas stuffed with cheese and topped with sauce.

I wouldn’t advise cutting carbohydrates out of your diet. Your body uses energy from 3 of the 6 essential nutrients (fats, proteins, carbs)… Of these 3 your brain can only use carbs for energy. You NEED to eat carbs. There are plenty of whole grain things out there… Healthy things. As for what foods… Try to stay away from starchy vegetables such as potatoes & corn and focus more in broccoli, spinach, carrots, celery, etc. Any veggies can be eaten as snacks. I know you’re trying to lose weight but you need some fat in your diet so don’t forget about that!

You can’t just change what you eat to lose weight. Exercising is essential. To lose weight exercise 60-90 min a day and don’t forget strength training which will help increase your metabolic rate by building muscle.
